Question: My first surgeon took too much off the bump on my nose. Now, I have a ski slope nose. How would you fix it?
Answer: If too much is taken off your nasal bump, something must be put back to create a natural, unoperated appearance!
First, Dr. Becker undertakes computer imaging with you, to determine exactly what your goal of surgery is with regard to your profile. Then, he will discuss your options with you.
If significant rebuilding is necessary, then a cartilage graft is usually used. This cartilage is taken most commonly from the nasal septum (inside your nose). Fortunately, a large number of patients who have had multiple rhinoplasty surgeries still have nasal septal cartilage. Dr. Becker will be able to tell for sure when he examines you. If you do not have septal cartilage, Dr. Becker would take cartilage from behind your ear.
In patients with very thin skin, Dr. Becker may discuss the additional use of Alloderm, a material that will provide additional cushioning and camouflage of the cartilage graft.
Alloderm is a non-cellular human dermis taken from an organ donor and treated with a patented, FDA-approved treatment. Alloderm is used in a number of facial cosmetic applications, including lip augmentation, scar revision, and rhinoplasty. In revision rhinoplasty in patients with extremely thin skin, Alloderm may be placed between the skin and the graft to thicken the skin and thereby provide additional camouflage for the graft.
This patient had a reconstructive rhinoplasty in which Alloderm was used due to his thin nasal skin.
Question: Why don't you use artificial implants?
